Competere Introduction

Competere Introduction

Hello, World! My name is Kenji and I am passionate about competition. I have participated in a wide range of competitive avenues throughout my life and have always been fascinated in the parallels that exist between them. Through competition, I have found methods of self-expression that I otherwise would have never thought possible. Through competition, I have discovered more about myself than in any other medium. Through competition, I have met the most extraordinary people that have continually humbled and inspired me to learn and improve myself to the fullest.

We often speak of competition as a zero-sum game, a non-cooperative enterprise in which we seek to gain from each other’s loss. However, it is my intention to change the narrative on what it means to “compete.” The roots of the word “compete” in English comes from Latin’s “competere.” A more direct translation to English yields the phrase “to seek (strive) together.” In competition we must ask ourselves "what is it that we are seeking?" To be the best? To defeat the opponent? Much like the motto of the Olympics, “Citius, Altius, Fortius,” or “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” it is in my opinion that the principle aim of competition is seeking to actualize our highest potentials together.

The purpose of this project is two-fold: to outline and explore the underlying principles of strategy in competition and to demonstrate how people utilize these methods as a means of expression and self-improvement. To accomplish this we will be taking a look across many different forms of competition and illustrate common patterns and parallels that exist between them. It is my hope that you’ll join me in the upcoming content that this project will be putting out and to help change the way that we see competition.
